I was delighted to spend a full and wonderful day at Marshall Lake in Washington with my uncle Bob and my cousins Kendra and Nicole. We kayaked. We fished. We paddle boated. We played Uno. It was fantastic.
I continue to bike and collect interviews, some of which surprise me in the most joyful, wonderful ways. 90-year-old John Gross of Napoleon, ND wouldn’t answer any of my questions until he had serenaded me with German songs for a good 20 minutes.
John and his wife, Margaret, are part of the Germans from Russia cultural niche of North Dakota and maintain strong ties to the linguistic, agricultural, and musical heritage they grew up with. After retiring from a life of farming, John now teaches traditional German songs to children in Napoleon.
